International Credit Union Week 2019
International Credit Union Week is about celebrating the impact of credit unions on a global scale. There are 200+ million credit union members around the world—more than 100 million in the U.S. alone—and we joined them in celebrating the not-for-profit cooperative spirit that all credit unions share.
This cooperative spirit has led to life-changing opportunities for people all over the world who’ve wanted to start a small business, own a home or continue their education but were denied access to other financial institutions. In many parts of the world, people’s first taste of democracy is through their credit union, where “one member, one vote” is the governing structure.
At its most basic level, a credit union is people pooling their money to provide each other with affordable loans—it is literally people helping people. Credit unions empower people, wherever they are in the world or life, to take control of their financial future.
Last week, we joined in the celebrations by volunteering, celebrating International Credit Union Day at our branches, and lunching locally!
Second Harvest
We began our week with some volunteer work at Second Harvest food bank. On Monday, October 14th, we worked in the community kitchen to prepare meals for those in need.
We believe that as a credit union, we don’t just have a responsibility to our members, we have a responsibility to our community as a whole. We work to be a source of good in our community, and we believe in the power of volunteering.
We are so thankful for the opportunity to help our community and look forward to our next volunteer effort!
International Credit Union Day
On Wednesday, October 16th, we celebrated International Credit Union Day! Each branch served refreshments and hosted a raffle.
We had a wonderful time celebrating with all of our members and recognizing the impact of credit unions on a global scale.
Lunch Local
Finally, we celebrated Lunch Local! Lunch Local is a statewide cash mob where credit unions across Louisiana eat at locally and family owned restaurants. We care about the community that we serve, and we want to help support the local businesses that make up the fabric of our city.
Since LCUL launched CU Lunch Local, Louisiana credit unions have given back more than $115,000 to local businesses. We are proud to be a part of that number and look forward to participating again next year.
All in all, it was a wonderful and eventful week! We thank each and every one of our members for being a part of POECU. We look forward to continuing to serve you and our community in every way that we can.
