Throw a fabulous New Year’s party for next to nothing

Another day, another holiday party! You agreed to host the New Year’s party this year, and now the date is quickly approaching.

Party planning can be stressful (and expensive), but don’t worry! We’ve put together some tips to help you throw an unforgettable New Year’s party on a shoestring budget.

Ditch the décor. Party decorations can be a major money drain (plus all of the trash it produces is horrible for the environment), so go without! No one needs balloons and streamers to have a great time, so take the decorations off your list.

Make a TV slideshow. Ask your guests to send you their favorite photos from the last year and create a slideshow. This makes for an excellent conversation starter, and costs nothing!

Use sparklers and confetti instead of fireworks. Everyone loves a fireworks display, but it’s very expensive. There will be plenty of fireworks going off at midnight, so don’t stress about getting your own. Instead, shred up some old magazines to create confetti and buy some sparklers for your guests.

Stick to finger food. Since New Year’s parties are typically later in the evening, most of your guests will probably eat dinner before they arrive. Instead of creating a full spread, set out a few finger foods. A cheese board, fruit, a dip, and something sweet are enough to satisfy guests and won’t break the bank.

Provide one cocktail and make the rest BYOB. Don’t feel like you need to spend hundreds of dollars to stock a bar for your party. Instead, let your guests know that you will be making one holiday punch, and if they would like anything else, they are free to bring their own. This saves you from playing bartender all night and saves your wallet too.

Co-host the party. Lessen the financial and planning burden by co-hosting the party with a friend. Decide beforehand how you want to split the cost of the party and start planning!

We hope you have a wonderful, safe, and fun New Year! Just remember: your friends and family don’t whether you have the most expensive champagne or the biggest fireworks display. New Year’s parties aren’t about the glitz and the glamour when you get to the heart of it, they’re about entering a new year surrounded by the people you love most.
